Toothbrushes available in the market come in different shapes, sizes, and styles. Therefore, deciding the type of toothbrush you should buy can be confusing, here is what you need to look out for when buying a toothbrush regardless of whether it is manual or powered. Talk to a Dentist in Lahore or a Dentist in Karachi to know what products will be most effective for you.

    Size

The best toothbrush head allows easy access to all teeth surfaces. A toothbrush head is half an inch wide and one inch tall for most adults; it is the most effective and easiest to use. Larger toothbrush heads are more difficult to maneuver to clean hard-to-reach areas, for example, the back and sides of your molars. Moreover, the handle of the toothbrush should be long enough so you can comfortably hold it in your hand.

    Bristle variety

Toothbrushes come with hard, medium or soft nylon bristles. For a vast majority of people, the safest and most comfortable choice is a soft-bristled toothbrush. Depending on the strength of your teeth and how aggressively you brush your teeth, medium and hard bristle brushes can actually be damaging for the tooth enamel, root surface, and gums. For more protective brushing, be sure that the bristles on the toothbrush have rounded tips.

Should you use a manual/disposable or electric toothbrush?

As long as you are keeping your teeth clean using proper brushing techniques – you should be able to reduce the buildup of plaque and keep your gums healthy with either a manual or electric toothbrush. Although there are different kinds of more affordable powered toothbrushes being sold, electric toothbrushes cost a lot more than manual toothbrushes. Moreover, you will need to replace the removable toothbrush head as often as you replace your manual toothbrush, in addition to the initial expense of the electric toothbrush. However, if an electric toothbrush helps keep your teeth cleaner, a reduction in dental bills may make up for the expenses.

How often should you replace your toothbrush?

A toothbrush should be replaced either every three months or when it begins to show wear, depending on whichever comes first. Likewise, it is also important to change your toothbrush after you have recovered from a cold since the bristles can collect germs and lead to reinfection.

    Which toothpaste is best?

Toothpaste is available in gel and paste, however, despite the different types, there are some ingredients that are common in most varieties of toothpaste, for example, abrasive agents and flavoring. The most important ingredient to look for in toothpaste is fluoride. The use of fluoride in toothpaste has been instrumental in decreasing the occurrence of tooth decay and cavity over the past 50 years.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral; the bacteria in your mouth feed on starches and sugars which remain on your teeth after eating. Fluoride toothpaste helps protect teeth from the acid which is released when this happens. The fluoride makes the enamel of your teeth stronger making it less likely to suffer from acid damage. In addition, it remineralizers the areas that have started to decay and reverses the early stages of acid damage. Make sure you check with your local dentist or orthodontist, such as those at Family Braces, before making any major changes to your oral health routine, as they will know your smile best!
